A Guide to CBD Expiration

CBD products last long enough to be consumed well before this happens, but it’s important for you as a business owner to be aware of your products’ shelf life.
In this article, we’ll discuss the different factors that go into the expiration dates for CBD oils and tinctures: how long they usually take to expire, what happens when they do expire, how proper storage can help keep it fresh for longer, and more. By the end, you should have a better idea of when you need to sell your CBD oils and tinctures by.
How Long Does It Take For CBD Oils or Tinctures to Expire?
As a rule of thumb, you should expect CBD products to last anywhere from one to two years. That said, this answer will vary depending on the product. This is a matter of both quality and the other products that the CBD is mixed with. Luckily the FDA requires expiration or “best by” labels on CBD products.
Along with this label, how your CBD products are stored can influence how long they last for.
What Happens When CBD Expires?
Expired CBD isn’t as satisfying an experience as fresh CBD, for a few reasons. The first is that it begins to smell and taste worse. Along with that, the CBD itself will be less potent. This means your customers will need to consume more of it to get the desired effect.
If you don’t want to open a bottle in order to determine whether or not it’s gone bad, you can also look to see if its contents are murky. This is a sign that the CBD has broken down and gone bad.
Old CBD isn’t usually dangerous to consume, but you’ll want to make sure that any of the other products in the CBD oils or tinctures won’t cause a problem if they’ve expired.
Does Expired CBD Still Work?
CBD that’s expired may still have an effect. The problem is that fresh CBD is purposefully concentrated, whereas old CBD will have broken down to the point that its concentration is unknown. This means you’re likely not going to get the same magnitude of effects you may expect from fresh CBD.
Why Proper Storage Is So Important for CBD Tinctures and Oils
One of the best ways to extend the shelf life of CBD is by ensuring it’s properly stored. Sunlight is one of the biggest problems here, since it will cause the CBD to expire more quickly.
Along with that, you want to make sure the CBD is packed tightly to avoid too much contact with the air.
